Traditional Festival of Zhuang People activities at Guangxi University

What is the Zhuang people Festival?

The Zhuang people, a Tai-speaking ethnic group, primarily reside in China's Guangxi province, also known as the Zhuang Autonomous Region. They also have communities in Yunnan, Guangdong, Guizhou, and Hunan provinces. One of their most significant cultural celebrations is the "Sam Nyied Sam," or the 3rd Day of the 3rd Month Festival, observed according to the Chinese lunar calendar. This vibrant event is marked by traditional music, dance, sports, and unique culinary offerings, reflecting the rich heritage of the Zhuang people.

On April 10, 2021, Guangxi University hosted a grand gathering at the west campus ground to showcase the traditional activities associated with the Zhuang Festival. Students from various colleges, along with the Students' Union, actively participated in the festivities, bringing the cultural traditions of the Zhuang people to life.

The festival was filled with captivating performances, including the iconic bronze-drum dance, the elegant sun dance, and the lively hand-towel dance. Other traditional dances, such as the paper-horse dance, straw-man dance, and water-buffalo dance, added to the cultural richness of the event.

In addition to the dances, the festival featured various traditional games, including volleyball, walking with sticks, bamboo dance, and arrow shooting. These activities provided a dynamic and interactive way for participants and spectators to engage with the Zhuang culture.
